'Seated female (Beth)' Oil Pastel on Paper, 90 minute study
Probably the favourite life model that Mari and I draw (at our Ruthin Life Drawing group) is a woman called Beth. She has the ability to adopt a rather difficult-looking pose and then hold if for an hour or so with no movement whatsoever. She also has a slim-mish build so bones and muscles can be clearly seen, which is a real help in this caper. Unfortunately, during the lockdown period, she has given up modelling, and so we're unlikely to see her again. Therefore I thought I would show a few examples.

'Sleeping female (Beth)' Oil Pastel on Paper, 90 minute study
When models have a lying down pose they can occasionally nod off. And if the pose is too straightforward it can be a bit boring. But Beth, as here, gives the pose a little thought, and the twist in the torso, although probably difficult to hold, gives linear flowing interest to the composition.
'Leaning female, second stage (Beth)' Black conté crayon, (30 minutes).
First stage of a life drawing = faint circles and guide lines to establish placement on the sheet and of the broad elements of the figure. Second stage = firmer outline of the body to confirm proportions and shape,Third stage = tone and texture to describe the solidity and details of the figure.

The base colour (acrylic paint on white paper) happens to be fairly close to the tonal value of the skin, so only a minimal amount of pastel work is needed to describe the shadows and highlights on the body.
'Life Studies (Beth)' Bistre conté crayon, (10 minutes per figure).
This 'palimpsest-style' sheet is very similar to the one following. Beth chose the poses, which makes me think, on reflection, that she may have had a kind of routine which she used when given a free choice of multiple short poses. I'm speculating.

'Two figures' Oil Pastel on Paper, 4 hours
We very occasionally have two models. This is a great exercise in that other considerations come into play, for example the space between and around the models, their relative size and proportions, the overall composition, etc.

'Standing female (Beth)'Black conté crayon, (10 minutes).
And lastly, this particularly angular pose by Beth (possibly exaggerated by the love of cubism, and associated movements, that I have lurking somewhere inside). So this drawing ended up looking (unless I'm misreading it) a touch 'Futurist'.
