Ogmore Vale (In Detail)

I've just recently been doing a painting for Groundwork Wales - an organisation devoted to improving the environment of Wales.

My efforts are part of a project called 'Discovering the Valleys' and aims to promote the valleys of South Wales by placing paintings onto posters (along the lines of the 1930's campaign which featured artists like Sutherland and Nash).

There are nine other artists taking part in the project, and I must say, the idea of helping in some way to promote the landscape of Wales is just up my alley.

As a result I have been doing some research down in Ogmore Vale (this particular location was 'allocated' to me by the project organisers). Having done some painted sketches, I noticed that some cropped details of the sketches looked interesting as textures or 'mini-abstracts'.

Here are a few examples . . . .

"Under ordinary circumstances, bad art naturally gets sorted out and disappears. That is how history works when it is left alone to do its job. The paradox of the culture wars is that they have made celebrities out of some artists who would otherwise vanish. Censorship has become a growth industry. This may be the best argument, in the end, for unfettered freedom of expression."
