Mari and I have been visiting various artists studios and workshops during what is called Helfa Gelf (which, translated into English, means Art Trail). It is an event where studios are open for the public over the whole of North Wales, for a few weekends, and visitors choose which ones they visit.
It can be very interesting simply going into the studios of other artists and craftsmen, often in their own homes, and seeing how they work. Sometimes they have artwork on-going during the period, so visitors can 'look over their shoulder' and see how they do it.
The one we really enjoyed today was seeing the work of the 'Cilcain five', - a group of five artists who work individually but exhibit together in the village community hall. I loved it.
A really friendly atmosphere, some great homemade cakes, and some very good work.
Ronnie Drillsma, (photo above - who comes to the Ruthin Life Class) was exhibiting some excellent paintings and collages. She has a brilliant colour and texture sensibility, and has evolved a personal technique involving painting with rollers, adding collaged elements, and overpainting details where necessary.

Ronnie demonstrating
All the people (above) watching and listening to Ronnie are from a visiting art group, so they all start from a knowledgeable base. Nevertheless it's always instructive to hear how someone else works, - invariably something of value can be picked up.
